Meet the Minds Behind the Mission: Board Member Spotlight – Nicklaus Lo

As a nonprofit, our focus here at Day & Knight Chess is to help youth development through chess and continual training. Our entire board and everyone involved with our organization is all about spreading the word about chess, helping kids learn more about chess, while improving their knowledge and skills. We are all very passionate about chess, including Nicklau Lo, one of our board members.

What encouraged Nicklau Lo to join our organization?

Nicklau Lo, like many others in our team, has been a part of chess tournaments and played chess since kindergarten. Right now, he has over 18 years of chess experience and fully understands the benefits of chess for students. Not only that, but it’s his focus to convey his love for chess and use its power to help others learn, improve, and become the best in the world of chess.

Nicklau Lo, or Nick, as we call him, started competing during elementary school and played in monthly tournaments even through high school as well. He managed to achieve many amazing results in the world of chess. For example, he won first place during the CalChess JV State Tournament in Northern California. Despite the fact that Nick is semi-retired from competitive chess, he was excited to join our organization and focus on coaching and teaching others who want to improve their chess knowledge and expertise.

Why was it important for Nick to continue with his love for chess?

One of the things you’ll notice right off the bat is that Nicklau Lo is very adamant about playing chess and connecting with other people who enjoy this incredible game. Even after he decided to complete his master’s in education with a true focus on assessment, he started focusing more and more on focusing on the community and what it has to offer.

It’s very important for our chess club to introduce chess to children and anyone who wants to play this incredible game. Nicklau Lo brings his unique experience and knowledge, and he uses it to help people improve, learn the ins and outs of chess, while also developing skills that could help them win chess tournaments!

It’s crucial to ensure that we focus on the future of our society, and as Nicklau Lo states many times, chess can be a huge part of that. As we all know, chess can improve your memory, boost your concentration, while helping with logical reasoning and problem-solving. It’s extremely important for us to introduce kids to the world of chess, so they can harness all of its amazing benefits and enjoy everything that chess has to offer.

And that’s why Nicklau Lo is an active part of our board, because not only does he love chess a lot, but he also enjoys the human connections developed through playing the game. He wants to be more than a simple chess player; he wants to take the role of a teacher and mentor, while assisting everyone as they focus on improving their skills.

Nick’s involvement in the Day & Knight Chess programs

Ever since Nick joined us, he has been focused on promoting chess for kids and improving our focus on after-school chess programs. Since he started playing at a very young age, he knows how important it is to get started with chess at an early age. Not only that, but he wants to ensure that kids with a love for chess have all the resources needed to learn, improve, and thrive within this niche.

That’s why Nick is actively involved in our mentorship programs, but also the academy classes and after-school chess programs. Additionally, he even connects with the online community and gets involved in free courses, alongside the mentorship and coaching programs. He knows that becoming great at chess requires a lot of time and commitment. And while it’s not going to be a simple thing, Nicklau Lo continues to be here with us, doing his best to spread the joy of chess and help everyone improve their skills through continual play.
